Boadicea (1875)
Scale 1:24. Plan shows a sketch of the carved work as approved for the quarter gallery and figurehead of the Bacchante class corvette Boadicea (1875). The figurehead is a three-quarter female bust, looking forward, with long hair down the back and a diadem at the front. The bust has a Grecian-style pleated dress that drapes down to the trailboard.
The drawing bears the signature of William B. Robinson [Master Shipwright at Portsmouth Dockyard 1869-1874] and William H. Steil [Chief Engineer at Portsmouth Dockyard 1872-1877]. A note on the drawing states that the designs are approved but notes that "a somewhat more rounded line should be given to the bust of the figure as its to represent a female" dated 7 December 1874.
