A small hearth against the west wall of the north bay in No. 1 Smithery in Chatham Dockyard. The hearth has a crane, cooling trough and vice next to it and it is protected by corrugated iron sheets. Two small metal tool boxes, a wooden stool and a tin coat locker are against the end wall. The windows have been boarded up internally. The photographer is looking west-by-south.
