Small hearths at the west end of the north bay in No. 1 Smithery in Chatham Dockyard. The two hearths against the west wall each have a crane and cooling trough next to it and are protected by corrugated iron sheets. The workspace of the hearth in the centre of the picture also has a vice, two small metal tool boxes, a wooden stool and a tin coat locker. The hearth against the north wall on the right has a hooded flue above it. The ground floor windows have been boarded up internally. The photographer is looking west. A vertical format image.
