A very close view of two smiths using a B & S Massey medium duty drop forge steam hammer in one of the bays of Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. One is using tongs to hold a length of steel rod in position while the other man is holding a shaping clamp on the hammer base. Another smith is in the background. The photographer is standing to one side at the rear of the hammer. Transparencies numbers PCT3160 to PCT3177 were taken during the same operation.
