A smith and a hammerman forging the foot of a stanchion in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. The smith, wearing green overalls, is using tongs to hold a red-hot billet over a steel drum next to the furnace while the hammerman, wearing white overalls, is on the left walking away from the furnace.
