A smith and a hammerman forging the foot of a stanchion in Number 5 Machine Shop in Chatham Dockyard. A hammerman, wearing white overalls, is using tongs to hold the foot of the stanchion in a mould on the base of the B & S Massey steam hammer while the smith, wearing green overalls, is holding a moulding iron over the a red-hot foot. The hammer drophead has just hit the moulds. A vertical format image. Transparencies numbers PCT3331 to PCT3335 were taken during the same operation.
