Brochure petitioning for the Conversion of wooden ships of the line into Armoured Turret Ships.

Scale 1:48. Brochure shows a proposed section drawing illustrating the proposed conversion of unarmored wooden ships of the line (the left hand side of the section) into armoured turret ships (the right hand side of the section drawing). This brochure was designed by Charles Frederic Henwood to petition the government to convert its unarmored wooden ships of the line in a cost effective way into armoured turret ships. The brochure contains extracts of reports from Isaac Watts [1st Assistant Surveyor, 1848-1860; Chief Constructor of the Navy, 1860-1863] and Admiral Warden that support Henwood's ideas printed at the bottom of the brochure. A Controller of the Navy stamp dated 30 July 1867 is printed on the brochure. The ships mentioned for conversion in the brochure are Caledonia (1862), Ocean (1863), Duncan (1860), Gibraltar (1859), Royal Sovereign (1857) and Lord Clyde (1864).
