The Anglesey side of the Britannia Tubular Bridge which carries a railway line across the Menai Straits from Wales to Anglesey. The photographer is looking north-east from on board a paddle steamer in the straits. The bridge, designed by Robert Stephenson, was completed in 1850 with wrought iron rectangular box sections between three masonry piers. The centre pier is built on the Britannia Rock in the middle of the strait. On plinths at each end of the bridge are four limestone lions, two of which can be be seen in this picture.
