Portsmouth second class wherry
The 2nd class Portsmouth wherry Bird of Freedom is seen from the port side on the hard at Portsmouth. The Chatham Directory of Inshore Craft describes these clinker-built, double-ended craft, operated under sail and oar carrying passengers on trips around warships at anchor in the late 19th century, as considerably lighter and with less freeboard than 1st class wherries. The boat shown in the foreground has three rowing positions. Behind it on the hard is a shorter boat with two rowing positions, also clinker-built but with a straighter stem than the Bird of Freedom, and built with a transom.
