Portland lerrets Comrades and Pussyfoot at Portland

This image of a Portland lerret beached at Portland, seen from the port side, depicts the Comrades mentioned by H.O. Hill in his notebook listing for negative L448, beside the Pussyfoot. The 17ft double-ended, clinker-built, four-oared boat has a 'start rope' laced through its keel at the stern with which to haul it up the beach. When at sea this start rope would be coiled over the lerret's high sternpost. Laid on the shingle in the foreground are two of the lerret's oars, with the characteristic 'copses' at their inboard ends which fit over single 'tholes' which keep the oars captive when unattended during the shooting and hauling of nets.
