Two Maldivian women and a child
A black and white portrait photograph showing two Maldivian women and child stood by a wall or fence made of dried grass or other natural materials. All three face the camera. The women both wear ankle-length skirts with banded patterns at the hem with slightly shorter dresses over the top, which are plain apart from banded patterns around the neck and shoulders. Each wears bangles on one or both wrists. The woman on the right of the image has her hands resting on her waist. The woman on the left of the image has her hands on the shoulders of a child stood in front of her (they are probably the same woman and child shown in ALB1783.61). The child’s hands are raised to shoulder height and he is probably holding the woman’s dress behind him. He is wearing a loincloth, a necklace with a round disc of medal in the centre and bangles on both wrists. All three figures are barefoot, standing on bare earth. The wall or fence behind them has bamboo poles behind it at intervals and is probably part of a larger compound. The thatched rooves of two buildings can be seen behind this wall or fence, with treetops in the background
