A slightly distant port bow view of the lighterage tug Excelsior (1891) towing four spritsail barges on the River Thames, possibly in the Lower Pool, London. The four barges all have their mainmasts lowered so as to be able to proceed upstream beyond London Bridge. Two of the barges are fully laden. The photographer is on board a passenger steamer.
