India women resting whilst pounding rice
A black and white landscape photograph showing eight Indian women resting. The woman closest to the camera stands in the middle of the photograph with her left side to the camera. She holds a wooden pole, presumably a rice pounder, and wears a sari with a floral pattern. The other women, all behind her, include two sat on the ground, four standing and one, partially obscured, bending down. Several bundles can be seen on the floor, perhaps rice stalks or brushes, as well basket. The women are pictured in a shallow ditch or dip in the ground. Original caption (beneath, in ink): ‘POUNDING PADDY’.
