A woman and girl on steps at Itsukushima Shrine

A Japanese woman and a girl, possibly mother and daughter, on stone steps at Itsukushina Shrine. The camera is positioned on a higher step or at the top of the steps, looking down on the pair. The woman is wearing a kimono and holding a bag in her left hand. Her right hand is holding the child's left hand. The child is carrying something in her right hand, possibly flowers. She wears a white or light-coloured dress and socks up to her knees. To the right of the image, at the side of the steps, are trees with bare branches; to the left of the image, on the other side of the steps, is a stone wall. Three figures, stood in a line, are lower down, closer to the foot of the steps. A builing or gatehouse with a tiled roof can be seen beyond the steps in the background.Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): 'MAMA SAN AND BABY SAN VISIT THE SHRINE'. The page on which this photograph appears (with three others) is captioned 'MIYAJIMA ISLAND 17-4-47'

The album compiler clearly intended the caption to this photograph to be humerous. 'San' is an honorific similar to 'Mr' or 'Ms'.
