Three aircraft studies: a French Type-N 'Bullet' and De Havilland Airco DHR (fighters) and an R.A..F. FE2 fighter/bomber
Inscribed by the artist, lower right, 'De Havalland Scout' [sic] and 'FE' under the bottom-right drawing. Three studies of aircraft in flight on one sheet. The small top drawing is of a Morane-Saulnier French-built Type-N fighter aircraft nicknamed 'Bullet' because of the shape of its nose. It was introduced in 1914 but was difficult to fly and only 49 were built. The main drawing, to which the main inscription relates, is of an Airco DHR fighter designed by Geoffrey de Havilland: 453 of these aircraft were built, equipping ten squadrons. They were introduced in July 1915 and the survivors were relegated to training duties in 1917. The bottom sketch is of an R.A.F. (Royal Aircraft Factory) FE 2-type fighter/reconnaissance and night bomber. Over 2300 were built, 1915-18, and they were used by over 38 squadrons and by the American Expeditionary Force.
