Study of the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916; HMS 'Iron Duke' leading 3rd Division battleships, about 18.35

This is the position at about 18.35 on 31 May 1916 as seen from the British battlefleet. The 'Iron Duke' - flagship of Admiral Jellicoe as commander-in-chief - is leading the 3rd Division of the 4th Battle Squadron, seen from broad on the port bow and firing to starboard. She is followed by the 'Royal Oak', 'Superb' and 'Canada'. The 'Iron Duke' opened fire at 18.30½ on the German battleship 'König' about 12,600 yards to the south. This is a broad wash study, with little sharp detail, that Wyllie probably did not consider a finished piece, since he did not sign it.
