An English brig with captured American vessels
A scene during the American Revolutionary War. A large Royal Naval brig-rigged sloop of about 20 guns, is shown in starboard-broadside view running into an anchorage. There is a large amount of activity on board and the artist has shown some figures in the rigging. To the right and left of the ship are smaller American vessels captured by the sloop. They are flying the British Union over the American rebel merchant ensign of 1777, indicating they are prizes - presumably taken by the sloop. The painting is signed and dated ‘F. Holman 1778’
