Sierra Leonean woman carring a baby on her back
A black and white landscape photograph of Sierra Leonean woman carring a baby on her back. She is turned with her right shoulder facing the camera and she is looking to the right of the image. Her right arm hangs at her side. Most of her body is covered in a garment of striped material, the pattern consisting of lighter and darker bands. This is tied around her front, with what may be a knot over her chest. Above this, the top of a white or light-coloured blouse can be seen covering her shoulders and the upper part of her torso. She wears a conical hat with a different striped pattern. A portion of her braided, neck–length hair hangs down underneath this. Her right ear is also visible under the bottom of the hat. The lower part of her legs and feet are out of frame. The striped garment round her torso includes a pouch on her back, which is holding a baby. Only its head is visible. Its right ear is facing the camera and its head is tilted upwards. Its eyes are closed. To the right of the image, mostly obscured by the woman and her clothes, is a wooden chair. The pair have been photographed against a plain background, possibly in a commercial photography studio. Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): 'Sierra Leone Woman’.
