'Launch of the Shamrock' ['Shamrock IV']
Inscribed lower left, as title, signed by the artist and dated 1914. This shows the launch of Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht, 'Shamrock IV' from Camper & Nicholson's Solent yard (now Shamrock Quay) on 26 May 1914. It was 33.63 m (110.3 ft) long overall and of 108.3 tons. In 1920 it was unsuccessful challenger for the America's Cup and was broken up in 1932. The ensign flying at the stern is that of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club, of which Lipton - a Glasgow-born tea magnate of Irish parentage - was a longstanding member and under whose colours he made all five of his unsuccessful challenges for the America's Cup which his five different 'Shamrocks' between 1899 and 1930. Wyllie's drawing is a fully finished one, presumably based on rougher sketches made on the day. It appears to have been mounted for framing, but with the old window mount now removed.
