Athens
This drawing, although it does not include the sea, relates very closely to Wyllie's drypoint showing Athens and the Acropolis from the sea, and is probably a study for it. It may also relate to the picture exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1931, 'Athens from the Gulf of Aegina'. This was one of the three pictures that Wyllie was finishing in London prior to exhibition at the Academy at Easter 1931 when he died suddenly. Writing of this picture in her memoir of her husband's life, 'We Were One' (1935), Mrs Wyllie states that the studies for it were made the previous autumn on a cruise to the Mediterranean.
