Dutch Shipping with a Flagship and a States yacht
A flagship on the left flies the Dutch ensign and a Dutch naval pendant. A states yacht, in port-quarter view and flying the Dutch ensign, is on the right, firing a salute to the flagship. The ships are shown sailing in a breeze, with a choppy sea. It is possible that the painting is of the Delfland, the flagship of Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter, off the coast of Texel. This painting is after the painting by Ludolf Backhuysen (Ludolf Backhuysen Gesselschaft on loan to the Ostfriesische. Landesmuseum, Emden, canvas 126.4 x 163.2 cm, signed and dated L.Back/ LB 1671 , with Rob Kattenburg Jan 1997 as 'The Dutch fleet with the Delfland, flagship of Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter, off the coast of Texel, 18 August 1665).
