Mr. Grinling Gibbons
Portrait of Grinling Gibbons (1648–1721), woodcarver and sculptor, by John Smith after Sir Godfrey Kneller (the original is in the National Portrait Gallery, London). Gibbons is shown holding a female bust and a pair of calipers.
Born in Rotterdam, Gibbons emigrated to England in 1667, after completing his apprenticeship. He first worked in York under the architect and builder John Etty (c.1634–1708).
