The Right Honourable George Lord Anson Baron of Soberton, one of the Lords of His Majesty's most Honourable Privy Council, Vice Admiral of Great Britain, Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet, and first Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty

An oval bust-length portrait of George Anson (1697–1762) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767. The portrait is supposed by Britannia, wearing a rostral crown and holding a British ensign. The sterns of the ships that make up Britannia’s crown are inscribed with the names of the ship’s involved in Anson’s famous round-the-world voyage in 1740–44: ‘Wager’, ‘Pearl’, ‘Gloucester’, ‘Centurion’ and ‘Severn’. Below is a triton wrestling a walrus. Lettered beneath the image with the sitter’s coat of arms and the title: ‘The Right Honourable George Lord Anson Baron of Soberton, one of the Lords of His Majesty’s most Honourable Privy Council, Vice Admiral of Great Britain, Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majest’s Fleet and first Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty.’ Also lettered with the production details: ‘J. Wandelaar effig ad viv. del Ornam inv. et fec. 1751. / J. Houbraken effig. sculp.’ This portrait was engraved by Jacob Houbraken after a portrait drawn from the life by Jan Wandelaar, who also designed and engraved the ornaments around the portrait in 1751. For a related print of Anson also by Wandelaar and Houbraken, see PAF3415. (Updated May 2019.)
