His Royal Highness Prince Edward Born March ye 14, 1738/9
A three-quarter-length portrait of Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1739–1767) in midshipman’s uniform with the sash and star of the Order of the Garter. He holds his sword in his left hand with a naval engagement in the background, Lettered beneath the image with the title and publication line: ‘His Royal Highness Prince Edward. Born March ye 14, 1738/9. / Sold by J. McArdell at the Golden Head Covent Garden.’ This print was engraved and published by James Macardell. Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, was the younger brother of George III. Entering the navy in 1758, he cultivated a public reputation as a glamorous and valiant officer, although his service record was somewhat equivocal: he was involved in a failed assault on Saint-Malo in June 1758 and a successful raid on Cherbourg in August 1758. His seagoing career ened after his brother ascended to the throne in 1760. (Upated June 2019.)
