Edward, Lord Hawke, 1705-1781. Engraver's proof

Engraver’s proof, etched state. A three-quarter-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. He stands in front of a rocky cliff, holding his hat in his right hand and his sword in his left with a naval engagement in the left background. Inscribed in ink beneath the image ‘Painted by Cotes / Etched by Jn. Hall 1792’. This portrait was engraved by John Hall after an original painting by Francis Cotes, produced in the late 1760s. Two copies of Cotes’s painting are known, one of which is in the National Maritime Museum (see BHC2754). This print is an engraver’s proof in the etched state. Hall published the finished print himself, together with Thomas Macklin, on 1 December 1793 with a dedication to the Duke of Clarence (later William IV). For the published state, see PAF3450. Removed from Box 0118; cards in box state: ‘Caldwell 305 J Hall after Francis Cotes Edward Lord Hawke (Ed & Eng) removed for loan to Admiral Morton, Admiralty. H P 25.9.78.’ and ‘Lord Edward Hawke after Francis Cotes Removed for possible loan 16.6.78.’ (Updated May 2019.)
