Adam Duncan, Viscount Duncan
A half-length portrait of Adam Duncan (1731–1804) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with a flag officer’s gold medal for the Battle of Camperdown and the sash and star of the Russian Imperial Order of Saint Alexander Nevsky. A ship is partially visible in the left background. Lettered beneath the image with a facsimile of the sitter’s signature and the title, ‘Adam Duncan, Viscount Duncan.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by J. Hoppner Esq. R. A. / Engraved by J. Andrews / Fisher, Son & Co. London 1831.’ This portrait was engraved by J. Andrews in 1831 after John Hoppner’s oil painting of 1798 – either the full-length version in Forfar Town and Country Hall or the three-quarter-length version in the Guildhall Art Gallery. The print was published by Fisher, Son & Co. as an illustration in William Jerdan’s ‘National Portrait Gallery of Illustrious and Eminent Personages of the Nineteenth Century’ (London: Fisher, Son, & Jackson, 1832), volume 2. (Updated June 2019.)
