Costume of the Royal Navy & Marines. Surgeons (uniform)

Hand-coloured; Plate 6. Depicts clothing, outerwear: uniform, surgeon's [Royal Navy]. This shows the single-breasted surgeon's uniform with red collar and cuff facings, buttons grouped in threes, a right epaulette and a left-shoulder strap, introduced under William IV in 1832. It was officially described as full dress from 1833 when a general undress version for officers, with the same button and lace distinctions was re-introduced, similar to the 1825 pattern. White facings returned in 1843. PvdM 3/04
