ML 1011 off Crete
Oil painting by Lt-Cdr Rowland John Robb Langmaid, inscribed by the artist and signed, lower left: 'M.L. 1011 rounding the coast of Crete into / an easterly gale. / Rowland Langmaid.' Langmaid (1897-1956) became a full-time painter after he left the Navy in the 'Geddes Axe' cuts of 1922 but served again during the Second World War, mainly at the shore headquarters in Alexandria, where he was appointed painter to the Mediterranean Fleet by Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham. The main upshot, in 1948, was a book illustrated by him called 'The Med'. Whether this is a wartime subject has not yet been checked, but it is likely. It is one of a group of 27 pictures by Langmaid acquired by the Museum in 1967, reportedly after payments for storage of them in a warehouse ceased and they were evicted, though the details remain to be confirmed.
