The first dock to be built in the Surrey Commercial Docks system was the Howland Great Wet Dock in the late 17th century. Later it was associated with the whaling trade and became known as Greenland Dock from 1763. The present Greenland Dock is an enlargement of this dock, which was carried out in the 1890s.
