The Battery, Portsmouth
A painting of about 1830 showing the Battery at Portsmouth from the saluting platform. The guns are lined up on the left and beyond is the fort and protective walls. The semaphore tower is in the centre of the painting with the old houses of Southsea lining the right of the painting. The atmosphere is leisurely as people are taking the air and enjoying the sea view from the platform. Several soldiers are shown on duty and chatting to the passers by, which includes ladies and naval officers. A couple with a child are looking over the sea wall in the centre distance.
