HMS 'Agincourt' at Malta
A ship portrait of HMS 'Agincourt' in Grand Harbour, Valletta, painted in oil paint on millboard. The image depicts the vessel in port-broadside profile, moored to a buoy, with a Royal Naval white ensign at her stern and a Union jack at the bow. The ship has a steam picket-launch and another boat moored to an extended boat boom, as normal with large ships spending time in a sheltered anchorage. Further in front are three Maltese dghaisas, one under sail and that to the left a tourist boat taking sightseers round the harbour. Other small craft, some similar, are in the background. Beyond, to either side of the ship, are (left) the pinkish-toned buildings of Fort St Elmo and (right) those of Fort Ricasoli, with the seaward entrance to Grand Harbour between. The sky is a graduated blue, with grey clouds, above a urqouise sea. The painting is signed by the artist, 'G. Gianni', and dated 1882, lower right. [PvdM amended 2/18]
