Repairing Lighters Lyme house [Limehouse], 1937

A view of the wharves at Limehouse from the water. Lighters fill in the foreground, and several figures work along the wharves. Buildings depicted with a high level of detail fill the background, one of which with the sign “Etheredge.” Signed by artist. A 1937 photographic series commissioned by Port of London Authority identifies this view as including Etheredge Wharf, Fielder's Wharf, and Lamb's Wharf. The photographic survey describes Etheredge Wharf as ‘A small barge repairing yard also operating a business as lightermen.’

Norman Janes (1892-1980) was a British Artist and Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers between 1945 and 1962. Janes attended the Slade School of Fine Arts, the Central School of Art and Crafts, and the Royal College of Art. His teachers included Henry Tonks, William Palmer Robins, Sir Frank Short and Malcolm Osborne.

One of a series of 1930s Thames prints by Janes (1892-1980). NMM does not have all of the prints in the collection; this includes 'The Rope Merchants, Greenwich' - a view of Moss's Wharf just east of the Trafalgar Tavern - of which (among others) there is a proof in the Guildhall collection.
