Thames scene
A blocky, linear view of the south bank at Rotherhithe along the Thames. Beached Lighterboats line the Wharf at Rotherhithe and the tower at left is St. Mary’s Church. A riverscape of this view from the 1937 photographic series commissioned by Port of London Authority identifies Hope Wharf below St. Mary’s. A departure from the photographic series’ view, Janes’ work takes in the curve of the bank, which allows the inclusion of lighterboats, steamers, and pleasure crafts in the lower right.
Signed by artist and dated.; No.7 of 40. Watermark at upper left. Etching includes aquatint.
