Dismasted merchantman drifting in a calm after a storm
The signature may be by the artist, but is not typical and may be another hand, though there is no reason to doubt the attribution. The media and size suggest this is a Sketching Society drawing (i.e. between 1829 and 1851), and these often bear inscriptions by other members, who retained the drawings done in evening sessions in their houses, by turn, and often added a note on them of the artists' names, a date, and the subject (which the host set for those present to interpret). However, this was not consistently done. [PvdM 9/04]
