HMS 'Victoria' at Malta
original art: drawing. 'Victoria', 101 guns (steam auxillary) was launched in November 1859 at Portsmouth and was sold for breaking up in 1893. This fine drawing probably shows her in the 1860s and comparison of the figures in the fishing dghaisa shown to the left, the buildings at right on Point Ricasoli, and the treatment of the foreshore rocks below with other work by John/Giovanni Schranz in the 1987 Schranz catalogue suggests he is the artist. There may be a minute fragmentary signature ('Sch...') on the bow of the dghaisa, in a form he also used. The drawing was once exhibited in an arch-topped frame and has faded a little where exposed, but has been well conserved, though this may account for the inclompleteness of the apparent signature.
