House flag, Athel Line Ltd

The house flag of the Athel Line Ltd, London. A blue flag with a white diamond in the centre inscribed 'ATHEL' in blue letters. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. A rope and Inglefield clip is attached. Prior to the foundation of the Athel Line, United Molasses house flag was similar but with 'UM Co' in the white diamond.

The Athel Line was started in 1940. All the company vessels had names with the prefix 'Athel'. The entire company was taken over by Tate & Lyle in 1965 and Athel Line joined a group with two Scandinavian partners as Anco Tanker Services. Athel Line took over the whole of the shareholding in 1972 and the Athel Line and Sugar Line Fleets merged. In 1973 the company became wholly owned by Tate & Lyle and in 1976 it merged with Panocean.
