Four Prints representing the different situations of the Essex....
Plate 1. The 'Essex', 799 tons, was the fourth Indiaman of the name, built by John Perry at Blackwall and launched in 1780. This incident of her dismasting in a violent storm between Tellicherry and Bombay, and her subsequent rescue, occurred on her exceptionally long maiden voyage under Captain Arthur Morris to India and China. She had left the Thames in December 1780 and returned in 1783. This is the first plate of a series of four (PAH0509-0512).
