The Essex East Indiaman Refitted, and at Anchor in Bombay Harbour
Plate IV. The 'Essex', 799 tons, was the fourth Indiaman of the name, built by John Perry at Blackwall and launched in 1780. This print is one of a series of four (PAH0509-0512) recounting her dismasting in a violent storm betwen Tellicherry and Bombay, and her subsequent rescue and towing to Bombay. It occurred on her exceptionally long maiden voyage under Captain Arthur Morris to India and China. She had left the Thames in December 1780 and returned in 1783. The oil painting which appears to be the original image for this print is in the Rothschild collection at Waddeson Mannor, Oxfordshire (National Trust), suggesting the others in the series were also based on oils.
