The Norfolk 1000 Tons
A starboard broadside view of the ‘Norfolk’ off the coast of Plymouth. At right, a yacht. Left distance, a three-masted vessel and cranes on the harbour. Lithograph. Signed in the plate.
This uncoloured impression gives the name of the commander as George Coleman. The coloured impression (PAH0648) gives the name as Bryant Tonkin who was Norfolk’s best known commander. She ran mostly to Australia (H Parker, ‘Catalogue of the Macpherson Collection’). At one time, the Norfolk was believed to be haunted, but the ghost turned out to be a mentally deranged passenger (Basil Lubbock, ‘The Blackwall Frigates’, p. 263).
