HMS 'Victory', bearing the flag of Admiral Sir Charles Ogle, saluting Queen Victoria in HM yacht 'Fairy' at Portsmouth, 17 March 1847
Hand-coloured. The full inscription reads 'H.M.S. Victory 104 Guns, / Captain John Pasco [in command], (who was Senior Lieut[ena]nt in this ship, and was serving as Flag Lieutenant to Vice Adm[ira]l Lord Nelson K.B at the Battle of Trafalgar, / in which action he was very severely wounded in the right side and arm). Vide Gaz[ette]. 1805. Page 1484 / Bearing the flag of Admiral Sir Charles Ogle, Bart, Com[mande]r in Chief, Portsmouth, 17th March 1847. / This print is dedicated by permission to Admiral Pasco'. The 'Fairy', flying the Royal Standard is at far left, heading out of the harbour, with the crew of 'Victory' manning the yards as it passes.
Pasco (1774-1853) became a captain in 1811 and was appointed to command 'Victory' as guardship at Portsmouth in 1846. It was his last command before being promoted to rear-admiral on the retired list in September 1847. This accounts for the reference to him in both ranks in the inscription and shows that while the view dates to May 1847 the print was either published late that year or perhaps in 1848. [PvdM 5/23]
