H.M.S. Alfred and other vessels off Rio

The 'Alfred' is recorded in the Navy List as serving in the South American area and the Brazils from June 1842 to December 1844 and this print, made and published in Rio de Janeiro, represents her during this period. The vessels shown are inscribed from left to right. Oddly the 'Sete de Abril' mentioned at left does not seem to appear. The second Brazilian shipto the right is presumed to be the ‘Armaçao’ than the 'Nitherohy' (the paddle steamer), with the 'Alfred', and the US frigate ‘Congress’ centre and right. The background shows the shore, apparently the harbour at Rio. The 'Armaçao' is shown from its starboard side, with lower courses furled, pointing to the centre of the image. The small paddle steamer 'Nitherohy' is heading towards the three sailing vessels. The 'Alfred’ is anchored in stern view with its sails sent down and with boat booms extended to either side.. The 'Congress' ,on the right, is anchored in port broadside view, with its sails extended to dry and air. In 1845 the 'Alfred' was listed as off ‘the SE coast of America’. Thereafter it remained in Portsmouth until broken up in 1865.
