When launched Himalaya was owned by the P&O Co. She was bought by the Royal Navy in July 1854. She was built of iron and had originally been intended for paddle, but was subsequently adapted for screw. She was converted into a coal hulk at Devonport in 1896 (Rupert Jones List).
