A boeier alongside a large Dutch ship
A port-quarter view of a boeier, her mainsail set, alongside a large ship (the ‘Hollandia’?) which is hove-to in a light breeze under topsails and mizzen. There are also several boats alongside and a barge pulling towards her. In the left background is a States yacht with a flag at the masthead.
This drawing possibly shows De Ruyter’s return to the Texel on 24 October [OS]/3 November 1665. It has been cut at the top so that the masthead is not shown, but the ship certainly has a pendant at the main and may also have a flag. The drawing is approximately dated by subject and watermark.
