Portrait of the 'Beurs van Amsterdam'

A starboard-quarter portrait of the ‘Beurs van Amsterdam’, 52 guns, built 1654 as an East Indiaman, taken into States service 1665, returned to the Company 1666.

On the tafferel is a picture of the Exchange at Amsterdam, a building with a tower on the right, built on a bridge over the Rokin. On the rail above is the arms of Amsterdam, supported by two dolphins. Two shields are on the counter; on the starboard side is the arms of Amsterdam with lion supporters, and on the port side the monogram of AOVC, representing the Amsterdam chamber of the East India Company. Inscribed across the upper transom is ‘…van Amsterdam’. Inscribed on the back is ‘de buers van amsterdam een schip vande ostinsjese kompanije van amsterdam’ [The ‘Buers van Amsterdam’, a ship belonging to the East India Company of Amsterdam]. Also inscribed in large writing ‘in dienst 1665’ [in service 1665].

One of seven offsets (rubbed on the back, not in reverse) from accurate originals neatly worked up with pencil. It is approximately dated by the signature and watermark.
