The stern of the 'Gouda' (1665)
A very detailed study of the stern and starboard quarter gallery of the ‘Gouda’, 72 guns, built 1665, last mentioned 1677. On the tafferel are the arms of Gouda, with a snake added on the pale, on a crowned shield supported by two lions. A female figure is above with her arm resting on a sword, seated amidst arms and trophies. Two large lions are on the quarters. A long upper slingerlijst. Two shields are on the counter, on the port side are crossed anchors and on the starboard side a lion rampant for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
This is an offset, rubbed on the back and very carefully worked up in pencil in reverse. It was probably used for a grisaille of De Ruyter’s fleet before the Battle of Solebay, 28 May 1672.
