Decoration of the head of the 'Windsor Castle', 1678

This is one of two drawings (along with PAH1890) of ship decoration. Both works are executed in very brisk pencil and wash. They have been approximately dated by their subject.

Here, Van de Velde has illustrated part of the port side of the ship’s head close to the lion figurehead. There are two angels depicted, their wings outspread. They are included among elaborate floral decoration.

Other drawings of the ‘Windsor Castle’ include a work by Van de Velde the Elder, in which the ship is viewed from before the starboard beam, in the Boymans Museum, Rotterdam (MB 1866/ T 367). There is also a drawing of the ship in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
