Admiral Sir Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood (1724-1816)
A three-quarter-length portrait to the right, facing left, showing Hood in flag officer's undress uniform (1774-83 pattern) and wearing either a white wig or powdered hair. His left elbow rests on a rock and he holds a letter in his right hand, with the right arm across the body. This is a near contemporary copy of the portrait by Reynolds of either late 1782 or 1783 now in Manchester City Art Gallery (ref. 1898.3). There is an entry recording payment of 100 guineas for the original in Reynolds's ledger, dated 22 July 1783. In the background the French flagship 'Ville de Paris' surrenders to Hood's flagship 'Barfleur' at the Battle of the Saints in 1782, where he was second-in-command to Rodney. It was presented to Greenwich Hospital by George Parker in 1808, at the time when Hood was its Governor. He died in that role in 1816 and, with his wife, is buried at Greenwich in the officers' vault of the old Hospital Burial Ground, flanking the Museum.
