Vice-Admiral Fitzroy Henry Lee, 1699-1750
A three-quarter-length portrait slightly to right in a blue coat and red waistcoat, laced with gold and a brown campaign wig. He gestures towards two private ships in the background to the right. The nearest of these flies the red ensign. Land is visible in the far distance. He is positioned in front of an artificial landscape of rocks, with vegetation behind him on the left and to the foreground on the right.
The sitter was the son of Lady Charlotte Fitzroy, 1664-1718. She was an illegitimate daughter of Charles II and Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland. He entered the Navy in 1717 and commanded the 'Pembroke', 60 guns, in the Mediterranean, 1738-42. In 1746 he went as Commodore and Commander-in-Chief at the Leeward Islands, where the complaints of his drunken habits and neglect of duty are, though not substantiated, at least supported by his general reputation. The portrait has a later inscription 'Adml. Lee', bottom right.
