A half-length, nearly full-face portrait showing Mounsey in his captain’s fell dress uniform of the 1812–25 pattern, wearing the CB and the medal for the ‘Furieux’. It is signed, dated and inscribed on the back: ‘Painted by E.P. Beaufort, 1916, from an original signed J.D. 1832’.
Mounsey joined the navy on 23 February 1780, aged 13, becoming a midshipman in the ‘Royal Oak’ under Captain Sir Digby Dent. He was promoted lieutenant on 22 May 1793 and appointed to the ‘Ardent’ under Robert Manners-Sutton. He was promoted commander on 29 April 1802 and, shortly after, took command of the sloop ‘Rosario’. He was then promoted post-captain and took command of the ‘Furieux’, a frigate he had captured, in November 1811. Mounsey was nominated a Companion of the Order of the Bath in June 1815 and retired from active service.
