Commander James Ptolemy Thurburn (1816-1908)
A half-length portrait, very slightly to the left, showing Thurburn in his commander’s full dress uniform, 1846–56; his left hand rests on the pommel of his sword. Sea and sky form the background with a distant ship on the left and a tree to the right. A 20th-century copy of an original painted at some point between 1851 and 1856.
